Using the Library

How to Take out and Return Books

  • To make a library card, you must simply fill out a short form. Anyone may apply. Local clubs or companies may also apply for a group card.
  • Books may be borrowed for 2 weeks at a time. You may borrow as many as you like.
  • To take books out, please bring them with you library card to to the counter. To return books, hand them in at the counter. (You do not need your library card.) When the library is closed you may place the books in the post box to the left of the entrance. You may also return books to one of the library branches or the mobile library.
  • If you have not finished reading a book, please bring it to the counter. You may take it out for another 2 weeks if no one else has requested it.

Audio-visual Materials

  • You may take out up to 2 audio-visual materials for 2 weeks at a time. Please bring the case to the counter with your library card to check them out.
  • To prevent damage, audio-visual materials may not be returned through the post box for books.
  • For copyright reasons, laser-discs cannot be lent out.
  • There are audio-visual booths in the library to listen to CDs and watch videos. Laser-discs may be watched in the library itself. Video booths can be reserved from 1 week in advance.
  • There is also a music corner. Please use the headphones provided to listen to one of the channels. You may make a request to the staff. The music may change suddenly according to someones request.

Newspapers and Magazines

  • We subscribe to approximately 230 newspapers and magazines.

The following foreign language magazines are available in the library:
○ Time (English)
○ ハンギョレ21, Hangyoere 21 (Korean)
○ PARIS MATCH (French)
○ 読者文摘, Readers' Digest(Chinese)

The most recent editions may not be borrowed. Please read them in the library.
Older editions may be borrowed for up to two weeks.

Searching for and Requesting Materials

  • There are terminals throughout the library from which you can search for materials by title or author, etcetera. You can also search online, here. *In Japanese.
  • If you have any questions or cannot find what you are looking for, please feel free to ask a member of staff at any time.
  • Please request any book that you cannot find. If they it is on loan, you will be able to take it out upon its return. If we do not have something, we may buy it or borrow it from another library.

Copying

  • You may copy library materials for 10 yen per page. Please fill out an application form and hand it in at the counter. (You may only copy as much as stipulated by the 31st article of the Copyright Law.)

Special Services

  • For visually impaired, we have books on tape and braille books. There is also a book magnifier. We can also hold one-on-one reading-out-loud sessions.
  • For the hearing impaired, we will communicate in sign or writing.
  •  For those with a physical disability that prevents them from coming to the library, there is a delivery service.

Materials on Kyotanabe

  • We are are gathering materials on Kyotanabe city. There is information available on Kyotanabe's history, geography, administration, folk customs, and literature. There are also books on the monk Ikkyuu and the tea this area is famous for.

Other Facilities

  • In the story corner, we hold a story-time and paper play for children.
  • There is a gallery where locals can display art work of all kinds.
  • We also have two meeting rooms; one with 64 seats, the other with 20 seats. They may be used during the library opening times. They may be reserved between 3 months and 7 days in advance. They may not be used for purposes in contrast with the goals and work of the library. 

Mobile Library

  • The mobile library, Kannabi Gou, drives around the city lending books. Please see the city's newsletter, Kyoutanabe (京たなべ), for the dates, times and stopping locations.
